60 MILLION REFUGEES: A GLOBAL CHALLENGE
THE RESPONSE OF THE JESUIT REFUGEE SERVICE Presented by Canadian Jesuits International Date: Tuesday, April 12th, 2016 Time: 7;30pm - 8:45pm Location: The Mary Ward Centre, 70 St. Mary Street Join us at the next CJI public event for a discussion with Fr. Tom Smolich, SJ the International Director of the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS). Fr. Smolich will speak of the experience of JRS as it responds to massive movement of refugees worldwide, particularly in the Middle East, but also in other ‘forgotten’ areas of the world. Fr. Tom will also talk about the JRS Global Education Initiative. Answering to Pope’s Francis call for a year of mercy, JRS has launched a campaign called Mercy in Motion. Fr. Smolich will share details of the campaign which aims to support the Global Education Initiative with a goal to educate 220,000 refugees and displaced people by 2020. THE LOOKING ForWARD CONFERENCE
Date: Friday, May 6th, 2016 Time: 8:40am - 2:30pm Location: The Mary Ward Centre, 70 St. Mary Street Cost: $10 per student (lunch included) A Day of Mentorship in Action: Conference includes keynote speaker and breakout sessions. Students will have the opportunity to engage in mentorship from women who are currently doing work in which they have the needs of the greater community in mind. Students will learn from, dialogue with, and network with these women as a means to get to know what their own gifts are and how they can be used to do good. |
MEXICO: SEEKING PEACE IN A CONTEXT OF VIOLENCE
An Evening with Miguel Álvarez Gándara Date: Tuesday, May 10th, 2016 Time: 7:00pm - 8:45pm Location: The Mary Ward Centre, 70 St. Mary Street Miguel is the president of Serapaz in Mexico City, founded by Bishop Samuel Ruiz. He is a spokesperson for the Movement for Peace with Justice and Dignity, which has publicized the names and photos of thousands of victims killed during the war on drugs. He is working with the families of the 43 missing students of Ayotzinapa in their calls for truth and justice. Miguel serves on the boards of the Fray Bartolome de Las Casas Human Rights Centre and the Museo jTatik Samuel, both in Chiapas. He worked closely with Bishop Samuel Ruiz for almost 40 years, including with the CONAI, the peace mediation commission which led the dialogue between the Mexican government and the Zapatistas in the 90s. This January, Miguel received the prestigious Jesuit IBERO award for his long commitment to the work of social justice. Padre Melo is the founder of the Human Rights Department at ERIC, a social analysis and action center. Radio Progresso, a Jesuit-sponsored communications apostolate, reaches over 1.5 million Hondurans and is an arena for marginalized communities to speak out against injustice. Padre Melo was awarded the 2015 Rafto Prize for Human Rights, recognizing his role as a “fearless spokesperson who works tirelessly to investigate and communicate the reasons for the violence and abuse committed against vulnerable groups in society”. He will speak about his experience as a human rights advocate and journalist who accompanies environmental and social activists in the struggle to promote awareness and social justice. |

CLIMATE CHANGE AND FAITH - A TOWN HALL EVENT
Date: Saturday, October 1st, 2016 Time: 12:00pm - 3:00pm Location: The Mary Ward Centre, 70 St. Mary Street As part of Canada's Climate Change Town Hall initiative, we will be hosting a Climate Change and Faith Town Hall. We hope to create a space to speak specifically to the spiritual responsibility and direction that congregations, communities and individuals have been taking and can move towards on climate change. With guiding presentations from KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, Jesuit Forum for Social Faith and Justice, Faith & the Common Good, and others, we will be holding an unconference style space for discussion on the role of faith and the environment, the needs and abilities of faith communities in responding to climate change, and looking towards an ecologically centered and sustainable spirituality. As our Canadian government puts forward a Climate Change Action Plan this fall, we hope to offer feedback from the perspective of our various communities, coming together in aspirational discussion that we can take with us in our work. |

KAIROS Blanket Exercise participants take on the roles of Indigenous peoples in Canada. As ‘storyteller’ of our soul-spirit-mind energies, body calls us to compassionate listening of ourselves, each other, the world and all creation. Gentle physical exploration and reflection can expand our awareness of The Spirit’s movements and of new life gestating within ourselves and our directees. We open to the never-ceasing birth of the Divine revealed in our midst. The day is open to people of all physical capabilities, at whatever age and stage we find ourselves. The Mary Ward Centre is fully accessible. Please wear comfortable clothing. Facilitation: Alexandra Caverly-Lowery MDiv, ThM, is a spiritual director, movement educator and liturgical dance artist. Former Associate Professor of Dance at York University and facilitator in Spiritual Direction Training Programs since 1990, her ongoing work is in the area of Theology, the Body and Healing from a Deep Ecology perspective.
