All-Saints Grade 11 retreat, Durham Catholic School board.
Our first in-person retreat since the pandemic. " It was exhilirating and energizing to be in the company of young people again!" - Kathy SHSM/TCDSB Ethical Certifications 2017-18
The Mary Ward Centre offers the Ethical Considerations certification for SHSM students in TCDSB. Using concrete examples and interactive activities, this program explores a variety of justice related issues including materialism, consumerism, inequality and greed, particularly in relation to our current environmental crisis. We examine our ethical responsibility, focusing on the movement from charity to justice. |
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise @ The Mary Ward Centre
The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is a unique partnership between KAIROS, Toronto Catholic District School Board and The Mary Ward Centre. Every week, 30 students participants in this day-long interactive learning experience that explores the Indigenous rights history rarely taught. |

JEM Gathering- Flourishing of Life for All
February 7-8th, 2018: JEM was pleased to offer Flourishing of Life for All with Dr. Heather Eaton, professor at Saint Paul University and Karri Munn-Venn, Senior Policy Analyst from Citizens for Public Justice. At this gathering, Dr. Eaton challenged us to reflect on the power and responsibility of religious communities to be a prophetic voice for action on climate change. Karri Munn-Venn challenged us to take action by pledging to individual climate action and calling for the government to end all subsidies to the fossil fuel sector right away. |
Metanoia @ The Mary Ward Centre
December 12th, 2017: Grade Nine and Ten students from Loretto Abbey, Brebeuf College, Michael Power and Father John Redmond gather for their first session of Metanoia @ The Mary Ward Centre. Guest speaker Sr. Evanne Hunter, IBVM, spoke about Agenda 2030: Sustainable Development Goals and the Loreto Sisters at the UN, and guest speaker Luke Stocking, Development and Peace, used interactive games to convey justice issues like poverty and inequality. |
CEFO Film Screening
November 23rd, 2017: The Mary Ward Centre was pleased to host and support the release of the film “Upon Whose Shoulders We Stand”. This film highlights the immeasurable contribution of Catholic Religious Orders to the education of our Youth in Ontario Catholic Schools over the past 150 years. Along with many other lay and religious contributors to Catholic Education, Sr. Evanne Hunter and Ann McGowan are both shown in this film, sharing the work of Loretto sisters at the United Nations and at The Mary Ward Center. Loretto Abbey Teacher Retreat
November 17th, 2017: Teachers from Loretto Abbey had their Faith Day at The Mary Ward Centre. Facilitator Sr. Evanne spoke about the history of Catholic education and the charism of Mary Ward. |
Spiritual Director's Day: Emerging Wisdom and Surfacing Gifts
November 4th, 2017: The Mary Ward Centre was pleased to be with over 40 spiritual directors for conversation and visioning for creating an inclusive and contemplative community for spiritual directors. Maureen McDonnell shared wisdom and input on sageing and aging. |
Kate Hennessy's Book Launch
November 2nd, 2017: Kate Hennessy is the youngest of Dorothy Day’s nine grandchildren. Hennessy’s widely acclaimed book is a family memoir, social history and intimate biography of Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement. |
CRC National JPIC Conference
June 6th-8th, 2017: Over sixty religious and JPIC people, came together for three days to explore what if means to honour, preserve and protect water. Elder Josephine Mandarin, initiator of the Mother Earth Walks, offered teachings, wisdom and ceremony of the sacredness of water. Maude Barlow, National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, challenged us to commit to upholding national and international trade agreements on water. Her emphasis on “Blue Communities” surfaced as a concrete way for religious to engage in action. |

May 29th, 2017: Cardinal Carter's Grade 10 visual arts students and Grade 11 leaders spent a day at Loretto Maryholme Spirituality & Retreat Centre. |
Event: Mary Women on Mission Today: Combating Human Trafficking- The Theology and the Stories
May 18th, 2017: Imelda (IBVM English Province), on mission in Albania for 11 years, established Mary Ward Loreto Foundation to combat trafficking in persons. She is President of RENATE, a European network seeking to end human trafficking and rehabilitate victims. |
Metanoia @ The Mary Ward Centre
April 19th, 2017: Metanoia held its fourth and final session at The Mary Ward Centre. Working in collaboration with The Eco-spirituality Committee (collaboration of religious congregations), keynote speakers included architect Roberto Chiotti, Sr. Evanne Hunter and Uju Umenyi of Canadian Jesuits International. Students from Loretto Abbey, Father John Redmond, St. Joseph’s and Brebeuf College participated in small group conversation circles with nine congregational representatives. Speakers shared their experiences of metanoia, their congregation's charism, and their personal involvement in justice work. Metanoia concluded with the students sharing their learnings with the group. |

February 8th, 2017: Grade Nine and Ten students from Loretto Abbey, Brebeuf College, St. Joseph's, Wellesley and Father John Redmond gather for their third session of Metanoia @ The Mary Ward Centre. Guest speaker Miriam Lopez-Villegas, Canadian Jesuits International, introduced students to the humanitarian response and advocacy to the global refugee crisis, and guest speakers Anne-Marie Jackson, Bill Ryan and Kevin Kelly, Jesuit Forum, offered students the opportunity to engage with and discuss topics from their latest workbook On care for our common home: A dialogue guide for Laudato Si'. |
Mary Ward Day
January 28th, 2017: Friends and Loretto Sisters gathered together for a day of input, reflection and discussion to celebrate Mary Ward and 170 years of IBVM ministry in Canada. Presenters included Ann McGowan, The Mary Ward Centre, and Anne-Marie Jackson, Jesuit Forum for Social Faith and Justice. |
