Addressing Homelessness & Housing Justice

Catholic Social Teaching and wisdom from other spiritual traditions emphasize that housing is a fundamental human right. We are called to care for each other with compassion and respect, upholding the dignity of all people, especially those most vulnerable. Mary Ward, the founder of the Loretto Sisters, provided food and medicine to those living on the streets during her time. We strive to continue her legacy today through our ministry educating the public on the issue of homelessness to promote advocacy for housing justice.

Our Mission

“We have watched this city find the urgency to spend hundreds of millions preparing for FIFA 2026, while nearly 1,500 people were identified as sleeping outdoors in Toronto's most recent Street Needs Assessment. We want to be clear: we support FIFA and want Toronto to succeed, benefiting our city, businesses, and communities, while warmly welcoming the world. Toronto deserves this celebration.”

The campaign’s goals
are clear:

We respectfully call on the City of Toronto Mayor and Council to:

Ensure that all individuals currently sleeping outdoors have access to safe, indoor spaces, including by urgently expanding low-barrier shelter and respite capacity across the city;

Provide clear, transparent information on where individuals can go in real time, ensuring that no one is turned away without a viable and safe alternative; and

Develop and communicate a comprehensive plan to prevent people from being forced to sleep outside, including contingency measures when shelters reach capacity.
