The Big YET of Christmas

As we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we remember the promise of peace and the responsibility we share to nurture it in our world. We share our poem prayer as a call to hope.

Hunger, homelessness,
and hate crimes are on the rise,
We hear of violent conflict, genocide,
the expansion of human trafficking
And suffer from the climate crisis –

During the longest hours of darkness,
this winter solstice,

It is easy to bow down
with the weight of the world

To wonder how things
might only grow worse

To withdraw into distractions

YET
the advent of Christmas
invites us to step into a transformative story;
One that is ongoing and
calls us to actively participate
in reshaping our lives

To acknowledge the darkness
of longing and despair
with an open heart that listens
to the piercing cry of baby Jesus:

A cry of new life
That says take care of me
Take care of the vulnerable

A cry of challenge
To be bold with courage
To dare to hope
in continuing our efforts

To bow down with humility
and trust in God’s will
as Mary did

A cry of awakening
That calls us to refocus
with wonder and awe
at God’s Divine presence

And enter fully into the Nativity
Bearing our gifts
to be a Light for the World
as Christ is.
