This summer of July 2025, I had the privilege of attending the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York City as part of Canada’s youth delegation. This experience was both inspiring and transformative, as it allowed me to witness how nations come together to deliberate on pressing global issues such as poverty, gender inequality, and discrimination. Engaging with leaders, including Minister Patty Hajdu and Ambassador Bob Rae, broadened my understanding of international cooperation and deepened my conviction that youth voices are essential in shaping sustainable and equitable futures.

Among the many events I attended, one session on gender and the lived experiences of women touched me most deeply. The discussion shed light on how women are often socially conditioned from childhood to shrink themselves—to sit “properly,” to remain quiet, to be agreeable—while simultaneously being burdened with the responsibility of their own safety. What was especially troubling was the recognition that society too often fails to hold men accountable for creating safe and respectful environments. Instead, the weight of safety, respectability, and restraint is placed squarely on women’s shoulders. Listening to these stories was both painful and empowering, as it forced me to reflect on my own upbringing and question the ways I may have internalized or perpetuated these harmful norms. It was a powerful reminder that dismantling inequality begins with honesty, courage, and a willingness to challenge the narratives we inherit.
Beyond the formal sessions, the forum also provided invaluable opportunities for connection. I met mentors and peers whose passion for justice and equity will continue to guide me.
Additionally, I learned more about African countries and their measures in accomplishing various SDG goals.
Ultimately, my participation at the HLPF reaffirmed my commitment to advocacy. It strengthened my resolve to confront gendered expectations and to champion inclusive, compassionate spaces where every voice—especially those of women and girls—can be heard and valued.
