From a very young age Mary Ward felt a divine calling to do something special in the world. It took her many years to discern exactly what God was calling her to do.  Many outer voices interfered through out her life, but once she perceived and embraced God’s inner call, she remained steadfast and her legacy lives on.

Mary Ward:

“I listened to God’s dream for me and felt a desire to respond to this invitation.”

The young people we encounter resonate with Mary Ward’s quest.  They too are in search of their place in the circle of life.  One of the most beautiful and powerful verses of our Holy Scriptures is from the book of Isaiah where God says: “I have called you by name, you are mine.” “I have carved your name on the palm of my hand.”

“Called By Name” is a fun interactive retreat we keep refashioning to respond to young peoples’ hunger to find their calling and place in this world.  Most helpful is the work and tools offered by Parker Palmer based on Frederick Buechner’s teaching that “The place God calls you is the place where your deepest gladness and the world’s deepest hunger meet.”

Among Mary Ward’s last dying words was:

“Cherish God’s vocation in you … let it be constant and loving.”
